James 4:13-14

There are three things I’ve said I would never do. I said I would never go to seminary. I said I would never move back to Birmingham. I said I would never have children. Never! I did move back to Birmingham, where I went to seminary, and I have an eight-year-old son. I long ago stopped saying never.

These verses are a reminder to keep the proper perspective. We are human and humans make plans for the future, but if we build our hopes and happiness on the plans of our own making we are likely to be disappointed. We do not have control of the future, we don’t know what will happen tomorrow. The big things like the rise and fall of nations are in God’s hands and so are the details. Next year is beyond your control, next month is beyond your control, and so is tomorrow.  Trust him. Memorize this.
